Star Wars and the month of May have a deep connection. There’s May the Fourth, which, thanks to some wordplay and some mistranslation, has become the official day of Star Wars. There’s the fact that the six original Lucas films all were released in May. But they weren’t the only important Star Wars stories released in May. Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire was first published on May 1st, 1991, thirty years ago today.

Heir to the Empire was not the first Star Wars book; the novelization of A New Hope actually was released months before the film, and that…

Hello,

I’m in the middle of writing too many different things as it is, and I can’t figure out a good way to start this newsletter off.

The Olympic Games

Gymnastics

This week’s big story was gymnast Simone Biles dropping out of competition in the middle of the women’s team gymnastics event. A great deal has already been written about that, certainly, but here are my thoughts anyway:

Biles is, at her best, the top gymnast currently competing, to the point she’s been asked to pull punches, as it were, when planning out the tricks she’ll attempt in competition, so that less…

Hello,

The Olympics are back! Say what you will about the people running the games, I like the Olympics. It’s fun to see people being the best at things. I watched the surfing for a few hours Saturday night. I’m still not confident that I understand how the winners won, but it was relaxing to have on, with the waves crashing and all.

Anyway…

As I said, I’ve been watching the Olympics, and tweeting about it some.

<blockquote class=”twitter-tweet”><p lang=”en” dir=”ltr”><a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/Olympics?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Olympics</a> Commentator let me know that the South African skateboarder was &quot;glad to be making tricks and not slamming…

Hello,

I have a complaint to make. the suffix -meter is affixed to the name of quite a few devices: Thermometer, barometer, hydrometer, dynamometer, etc. These words are pronounced differently than the decimal-fractional length units of the metric system: centimeter, millimeter, nanometer, etc. “Micrometer” can mean different things depending on how it’s pronounced; a MIKE-roh-MEET-ur is one one-millionth of a meter, whereas a my-CROM-et-ur is a turn-screw gadget used to measure the outer dimension of small things, usually to a precision of MIKE-roh-MEET-urs. There is one exception to this rule: “kilometer”. That’s usually pronounced kih-LOM-et-ur, to rhyme with the devices…

Hello,

I made my annual trip to the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge this past week. There is significantly less water there this year compared to last year, and significantly fewer birds about. Still, I saw quite a few things, including a family of coots and two black-crowned night herons, one juvenile and one adult; I’d never seen a night-heron in the wild before, so that was neat.

The Tomorrow War

Amazon Prime Video released a sci-fi movie to kind of mixed reviews, so I decided to check it out for myself. It was entertaining, but a bit underdeveloped. The idea of the…

Hello,

Today is the Fifth of July, which typically is not a holiday, but because the Fourth of July fell on a Sunday this year, a lot of Americans have today off. So, to my American readers, hopefully, today’s newsletter will enrich rather than encroach on your festivities.

Anyway…

Hello,

Next weekend is the Fourth of July holiday. I have no real plans to delay this newsletter because of that. It has been raining where I live for the past week, and it will probably rain for the next week, so I’ll be stuck inside.

Anyway…

Hello,

This edition of RC is a bit delayed, sorry about that. It was Father’s Day, and I had things to do associated with that, and this newsletter is honestly not a huge priority even on days I don’t have plans.

Anyway…

Watching…

New episodes are out of The Bad Batch and Loki, Here are my notes: SPOILERS

Due to the Father’s Day holiday, the next issue of A Running Commentary will not arrive tomorrow morning (6/21/2021). It will instead be delivered either tomorrow evening or the next morning.

Hello,

First off, a quick reminder that this Sunday is Father’s Day (in the U.S., I suppose I should specify.) Whatever you think you need to do about that, you have just under a week to do it.

Also, Sunday is the first day of Summer (in the Northern Hemisphere, I suppose I should specify.) That makes this the last RC for the spring. A Running Commentary was started last Fall, which means it is very nearly a newsletter for all seasons.

Anyway…

The Bad Batch
